Promethist Watchdog
Troubleshooting
In the window
Nothing appears on launch. Watchdog is in the tray under the ^ overflow.
"Watchdog is already running." Only one instance is allowed; launching again brings the existing window to the front.
It won’t start at all. Startup failures appear in a dialog and are written to
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Promethist\WatchDog\startup-error.log.
An app shows a red dot. Its circuit breaker tripped after crashing more than
max_restarts times within restart_window_s. Review the app’s events.log and
app.err.log for the day, fix the cause, then Start it from the window.
A healthy app keeps getting restarted. Freeze detection is too aggressive. Raise
consecutive_hung_polls or max_quiet_s, add a quiet window, or turn off the
heuristic detectors for that app.
A command line command does not work
-
"Promethist Watchdog is not running on this PC" - nothing is listening. Start it from the Start menu, or run its logon task:
schtasks /run /tn PromethistWatchdog. -
"running under a different Windows account" - commands only reach a Watchdog running as the same user. Log in as that account (elevation does not matter).
-
"is running but is not accepting commands" - it may still be starting. If it persists, ensure
control: enabledis notfalseunderglobal:inwatchdog.yaml. -
A failing command appears to succeed - you are calling
PromethistWatchdog.exeinstead ofwdog.exe. The tray program is a windowed application; PowerShell does not wait for it, losing its exit code.
Every command accepts --json, reporting the failure as a document with a stable
error.kind - useful in a script. Exit codes are listed in
Command line.
